How long is a dog pregnant?
The canine gestation period averages about 63 days. The exact length depends on what you count from: 58–72 days from a mating at an unknown point in the cycle, or a tighter 62–64 days from the day of ovulation when it is measured. Past 70 days from a known mating, the pregnancy is considered prolonged and warrants a vet visit.
Why the window is wide: a dog can mate a few days before or after ovulation, and the egg stays fertile for several days, so the same mating date can lead to birth anywhere across about two weeks. A veterinarian can narrow it with progesterone timing or an ultrasound.
This is an estimate from the average gestation length. Actual whelping varies with ovulation timing, litter size and breed, and it does not replace a veterinarian’s exam. Seek care if labour has not started by day 70.
